A Look at Top Healthcare Innovators in China

This is the second in a series of two blog posts about the QiPu Awards at China Europe International Business School. The first blog post explained the background of the QiPu Awards and shared some of the panels from the summit on innovation in healthcare. This second blog post will present the winners of the QiPu Award in each category.

The QiPu Awards recognize innovation in the healthcare industry in eight categories: hospitals, physicians, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, medical information, industry development, health policy, and public welfare. The winning projects are selected from sixty six nominees. After three rounds of committee review, the Qi Pu Award committee voted for winners in each of the eight categories. The committee of judges included Tang Feng, former CEO of China Resources Medical; Tiantian Li, CEO of Dingxiangyuan; and Hai-bin Chen, CEO of DIAN Diagnostic. Below are brief descriptions of the winners in each category, as well as a ninth winner recognized for special merit.

Hospital Services Innovation Award: Wenzhou Medical University Affiliated First Hospital

Wenzhou Medical University Affiliated First Hospital is a large, public, tier three hospital. The philosophy of the hospital focuses on patient centered care. The hospital employs the latest innovations in information technology to improve the patient experience. The hospital created a unique machine based system to ease patient registration and payment processes. This system systematically improved the efficiency of medical services and patient experiences.

Physician Services Innovation Award: Song Donglei

Song Donglei cofounded a private hospital in Shanghai. Previously, he had been a well known neurosurgeon at a public hospital. Song Donglei’s new hospital uses social media and interactive mobile technology to communicate with patients. Salons and clinics help the hospital to reach more patients. The strategies introduced by Song Donglei strengthened communication between doctors and patients and patients’ sense of belonging. Song Donglei set an example of how to use multiple communications channels to strengthen relationships and interactions between physicians and patients.

Pharmaceutical Industry Innovation Award: Shanghai CP Guojian Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd (CPGJ)

Shanghai CP Guojian Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. is a biotech enterprise that focuses on antibody drug research and development and industrialization. The technology used by the company enabled the continuous development of new drugs. The company has become a leading enterprise in the field of antibody pharmaceuticals. The company presents a practical example of how to develop a successful pharmaceutical enterprise in China.

Medical Devices Innovation Award: Dnurse Mobile Phone Glucometer

Dnurse mobile phone glucometer is a product that measures blood sugar levels in real time with the use of biological sensing technology. More convenient monitoring of blood sugar levels helps patients better control their blood sugar levels, under the guidance of their healthcare providers. China has more than one hundred million diabetic patients. The ability to control and manage diabetes is a great challenge for China. A combination of online and offline management solutions helps patients and their providers manage diabetes more effectivly.

Medical Information Innovation Award: IVT Mobile Health Management and Rescue System

This remote system helps hospitals to manage and care for patients with cardiovascular diseases and provide emergency transfers. Through the system, hospitals are able to establish a regional urgent rescue network for patients suffering chest pain. The mobile based system allows hospitals to diagnose, treat, and manage patients more efficiently when they are at home. Improved efficiency reduces patient mortality, disability, and healthcare costs.

Health Industry Development Innovation Award: DIAN Diagnostics

DIAN Diagnostics is an outstanding third party medical diagnostics institution in China. A third party medical diagnostics institution is an independent party that conducts sample inspections and diagnostics and reports the results to its clients, including hospitals, disease control centers, and pharmaceutical companies. In China, community clinical centers may not be able to afford to establish its own diagnostics labs. Smaller hospitals might not purchase specific diagnostic devices for small sample sizes. Clinics and hospitals send samples for analysis to DIAN, which tests the samples and sends the results back to hospital or clinic. DIAN is a cost effective diagnostic solutions for many clinics and hospitals.

Health Policy Innovation Award: Beijing Health Reform Policy Package

Beijing centralized the highest quality and the most diversified system of medical services in the country, as part of a pilot project to reform healthcare. The diversified management of the administrative department made it difficult to centralize the healthcare system. However, the existence of multiple managers did not prevent those involved in the health reform from setting key priorities. Separation of treatment and medicine was the core innovation of the reform. Another key reform effort is to establish a compensation mechanism for healthcare professionals. The project provided valuable experience for the reform of urban public hospitals from which others may learn. This pilot project can be copied and expanded.

Public Welfare Health Industry Innovation Award: Sichuan Luzhou Gospel Hospital

The Sichuan Luzhou Gospel Hospital is a grassroots level comprehensive medical institution. The hospital is also the first reconstructed church hospital in mainland China since these buildings were destroyed during World War II. Investors in this hospital do not receive bonuses, and board members do not collect wages. Hospital profits are used to provide care for low income patients and for daily expenses. The organizational structure of the hospital ensures that the hospital meets the church’s standards as a medical charity. The existence of religious charity hospitals bring an important and beneficial diversity to the healthcare system in China.

China Health Industry Special Award of Merit: No. 40 Document Issued by the State Council: “Opinions on Promoting the Development of China’s Healthcare Industry”

Health policymakers drafted this document to support the transformation of social and economic development in China. Policymakers proposed an ambitious development goal of establishing a healthcare system that covers the entire life cycle. This goal will be achieved by transforming government functions, mobilizing the enthusiasm and creativity of market and social forces, and vigorously introducing private capital to the development of healthcare services in China. The document has become a key source of guidance for the development of the healthcare industry in China.
